Fergus will not soon be forgotten

Sadly, Fergus got cancer and passed away on 28 December 2024. He was a happy little boy.

Rex the Dog in Full Color

Late last year, I ran across a black and white photo of Rex the dog. That post may be revisited here. Now, I've located a photo of Rex in FULL COLOR! The entire photo is at the top of this post.

Zooming in on the dog of interest, you may see Rex in color below. Actually, he looked pretty much the same as in the black and white photo...

By the way, Rex is in front of our house at 5130 South Augusta Street in Seattle. Rex's people in the photo are Steve and Lucille Averill.

Another Averill Dog

Nancy and Steve had their own dog. That first dog, as the ones that followed, was a labrador retriever. His name was "Hank." Hank was the name he came with. We had him from about 1981 until about 1986. He disappeared thereafter. We should have gotten the idea when Hank ran away from his previous owners the night we were supposed to get him. Hank was a great frisbee dog, but he was paranoid about being left alone, even for brief periods of time.

Still, Hank was pretty sweet. The photo below was Hank with Jennifer around 1982.

Pal in His Younger Days, Posting for a Portrait around 1970
After a long naming discussion, this was Pal's "official name." Nobody ever called him that. He was our Pal. Even Jennifer might remember him, and he was the first Averill dog that Nancy met. She didn't believe he could jump over that front fence at our house on 41st Avenue NE - until she SAW that decrepit old dog do it.

Pal was the fist Averill dog that died of old age, as far as I know.

Hang on Snoopy

Laura didn't send a photo of Snoopy, but I found one in the archives, with William. Snoopy was a pretty cute dog. Come to think of it, William was a pretty cute kid.

Remembering Rex

Rex, Circa 1958
Laura and Linda were too young to remember Rex, the first "Averill Dog." Jennifer wasn't around at that time. He was a Cocker Spaniel and lived with us on 25th Avenue before we lived in New Orleans. Rex was the very first dog I remember. Like most dogs we had when we lived on 25th, he died by getting run over by a car, around 1961 or so.

Still, Rex was a very nice dog, and one memory I had was going out into the woods with Dad to bury him after his passing. Thanks for the memories, Rex!

Inky from last summer
Inky left us today. About 5:35PM CDT. We thought he might not make it past our summer vacation last August, but he kept on keeping on until this morning when he couldn't get up, eat, or drink any more. He went out the same way he lived his life. An unusually calm and mellow dog, taking what life threw at him without complaint.

A chart on the vet wall indicated he was 115 in dog years. He'll be missed. Note to Inky - stay away from the chocolate in Dog Heaven - it's not good for dogs. Instead, go chase those durn cats!
